Ripon High’s class of 2024 battled gusty conditions Friday at Stouffer Field, and its anticipated ceremony was interpreted by a passing train.

Not that a little adversity is going to bother what is believed to be one of the largest graduating groups in school history.

These Indians started high school in the middle of a pandemic, which has helped them learn to be adaptable.

“COVID gave us a unique experience,” senior class president Ava Brocchini said. “Some may say our high school experience was ruined by it. However, I think those experiences made our senior year more special.”

Or as salutatorian Spencer Redula put it, “We showed that this class is immensely talented.”

Brocchini and Redula were among the 254 outgoing seniors receiving their diplomas on Friday.

Co-valedictorians Sahaj Gill and Gabriela Melgarejo also gave speeches. Gill is headed to Cal, Melgarejo to Stanford and Redula to UCLA. All three boast 4.3 GPAs.

Melgarejo gave a nod to her immigrant parents from Mexico, quoted “important” musical artist, Jungkook of BTS — “Don’t stop when you are tired, stop when you are done” — and parroted international soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo — “Your love makes me strong. Your hate makes me unstoppable — as a response to critiques.

After the customary processional, Ripon’s JROTC presented the colors, as the choir sang the Star Spangled Banner, under the direction of Geoffory Felver. The choir also performed the school’s hymn.

Board of Trustees members Vince Hobbs, Caroline Hutto, Kit Oase, Christina Orlando and Jason Winter were on hand to award the graduates with their diplomas.

Principal Keith Rangel presented and accepted the class of 2024. The event concluded with the recessional and the playing of the class song “Home” by Phillip Phillips.
